2024 College Football Season: Spring Recap
Rule changes, transfer portal, spring games, and more.
The Rundown:
It was an interesting week in the college football world. Before we even get to the transfer portal and the haul of spring games, there was a major change to the rules of the sport. The two-minute warning was voted into action by the NCAA D-1 Council. If you’re a fan of NFL football you know what this is, but just in case we have some college football only readers, it’s a suspension of gameplay that occurs at the two minute mark of each half. Along with the clock rules from last season, the speed and pace of games are sure to be vastly different from just two seasons ago. The rule change also all but ensures a defacto timeout for both teams dependent upon situation.
I spoke briefly about it via social media, but in my opinion, it’s an unnecessary rule change. It’s one that further pushes the on-field product towards the NFL. Between the new 12 team playoff system, the running clock changes of last season, and now the two minute warning, almost everything we enjoyed about the college style gameplay is being wiped away. It wouldn’t be surprising if new kickoff rules are applied to mimic professional leagues as well. Furthermore, a rule change that would allow players to potentially transfer IN season and be eligible if academic requirements are met may be enacted by the NCAA D-1 Council.
As far as the transfer portal goes, it hasn’t been quite as crazy as anticipated, but still absolutely ridiculous when you consider the talent available. On offense, you have players such as Kadyn Proctor (Alabama commit), Justin Ross-Simmons, Damien Martinez, Jaden Rashada, & Keandre Lambert-Smith who are yet to sign to a program. Defensively, you have the likes of Cormani McClain, Damonic Williams, Greedy Vance, & Elijah Herring still on the board. To be able to acquire that level of talent post-spring practice marks a truly different time in the spot. Expect more in the next week.
