No Huddle Pt 3: New and Old Realities Of The Spring
Quick thoughts on the week of football action
To say a lot has happened since our last No Huddle would be an understatement. The football world is in the middle of transition. We’re in the middle of the transfer portal window, the spring practice window is coming to a close, UFL action is up in full force, and the 2024 NFL Draft is merely five days away. It’s an exciting time, but a time that will certainly shift from hopeful to heavy.
With the dreams that will be realized at the draft on Thursday, and the excitement of new announcements in the transfer portal — there’s always a flip side. Dreams will also become sobering realities for some prospects with NFL dreams, the same way dreams will become nightmares for players who don’t find new homes in the transfer portal. I say that to say, as excited as we all are for the coming weeks, there’s still a human aspect that typically gets lost in times like these.
Many people have qualms with the transfer portal and NIL as a whole, but oftentimes the real life impact gets swept under the rug. Another very real situation we seldom address is the fact that a good portion of the transfer portal entries are not by choice. If you’re not on the field and on it early, you could be asked to leave to make room for a new guy. The same way a veteran could be forced out for a younger prospect with more “potential” — I for one hope we are more cognizant of those hardships going forward.
Regardless, we must also acknowledge that the carousel never stops turning. 2025 draft boards are already being assembled, college football rosters are being filled for the coming season, & UFL spring leaguers are fighting tooth and nail to get the call up to the NFL. The game is the game. Let’s break the huddle.
